Visit the Church of Santa Margalida

Step into one of the town's most notable heritage sites and discover its altarpieces, its history, and its presence within the local landscape.

A visit to the Parish Church of Santa Margalida is essential for discovering the town’s heritage and history. Situated at the highest point of the village, the church overlooks the town center and forms one of Santa Margalida’s most iconic landmarks.

The current building replaced the old medieval church and preserves highly valuable artistic elements, such as altarpieces from various periods and remnants of the original Gothic altarpiece. Furthermore, the area surrounding the church offers fine views of the agricultural plains that encircle the village.

It is an ideal visit to combine with a stroll through the historic center, the town square, the Rectory, and Santa Margalida’s traditional houses—a simple, leisurely way to discover the municipality’s authentic heritage.

Within the town centre, at the highest point of Santa Margalida, stands the jewel of the town, the Església Parroquial de Santa Margalida. The retaining wall of the clay hill on which the church stands creates one of the most attractive spaces in the Vila, offering views over the extensive farmland surrounding Santa Margalida. At the same time, the wall and the silhouette of the church form one of the most characteristic profiles of the Vila.

The church was built in the 13th century on the land where the alqueria of Hiachat stood during the Islamic period. Tradition holds that the church took its dedication from the discovery of an image of Santa Margalida in a cave located on the land where the building was constructed. However, historical evidence suggests that the dedication to Santa Margalida was due to the fact that the first clergy of the parish came from Santa Margalida d’Empúries (Catalunya). Over time, the church became too small to accommodate the entire population and was replaced in 1660 by the current building.

The church is a clear example of Baroque religious architecture from the Part Forana of the island of Mallorca. Its façade stands out for its restrained decoration, consisting only of string courses and the rose window. Also noteworthy are the portal Major and the figures accompanying it: Santa Margalida, Sant Pere and Sant Joan Baptista. Inside, part of the old Gothic altarpiece that once presided over the previous church has been preserved, featuring one of the most important surviving examples of Mallorcan Gothic art influenced by the Sienese school in Mallorca. There are also other noteworthy altarpieces from later periods, including the main altarpiece from the 18th century, the Sant Francesc altarpiece from the late 16th century and the Sant Sebastià altarpiece.
