Pou d’Hero

This is the public well of the medieval settlement of Hero, documented as early as 1347. The discovery of Roman and Islamic ceramic remains nearby suggests that its origins may be even older. According to historical sources, the well belonged to a Roman settlement called Hero. Later, this settlement became an Islamic alqueria which, after the conquest of Mallorca, became part of the territory belonging to the Comte d’Empúries. During the Middle Ages, it formed part of a small settlement with an oratory. Eventually, the houses of the settlement disappeared, and today the Pou is the only surviving element of the ancient Roman settlement. This well is the subject of traditions and legends about the origins of the town and, for the people of Santa Margalida, it is one of its most emblematic places.
