Pedrera de Son Real II

The Son Real *marès* quarry is one of the most interesting elements of the estate's ethnological heritage. This quarry was used for the extraction of *marès*, a type of sandstone traditionally widely used for construction in Mallorca.

The quarries extended right to the seashore and, over time, part of them has been submerged by the sea. This creates a unique landscape where human activity, stone and the coastline come together in the same setting.

According to oral accounts, the quarries were suddenly abandoned during the Spanish Civil War. This abrupt interruption means that traditional extraction techniques and remains of structures associated with the activity, such as huts, can still be seen today, giving the site considerable ethnological value.

The quarries are located very close to the Necròpolis de Son Real, making it possible to combine archaeological heritage, coastal scenery and the memory of traditional trades in a single visit. Even today, wheel ruts left by carts can be seen carved into the ground along the access path, recalling the transport of sandstone blocks and the intense activity that once took place here.

This site offers the opportunity to discover a lesser-known side of Son Real: a working coastline where nature and human activity have left a visible imprint filled with history.
