Can Verga vell

Can Verga Vell is a historic mansion in Santa Margalida built by order of Joan March Estelrich—father of Joan March Ordines, one of the town's wealthiest individuals during the first quarter of the 20th century.

The building features a design that may have been inspired by the former palace of the Comte de Santa Maria de Formiguera, demolished shortly before, in 1922. This possible influence reflects a clear desire to emulate the lifestyle of the former nobility and project an image of prestige within the social context of the period.

As in the former palace, access to the manor house is via a staircase and terrace leading to a semicircular arched doorway. Together, these elements give the building a stately presence and make it a notable example of the civil architecture of Santa Margalida.

Can Verga Vell helps us understand the social and urban transformation of the Vila at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the role played by certain wealthy families in shaping the local architectural landscape.
