Calipso

Calipso evokes the myth of the island, seduction, and the pause in Ulysses’ journey. It is a piece linked to desire, beauty, and the tension between staying and departing.

Calipso is a sculpture by Joan Bennàssar created in 2022 as part of the La nova Ítaca de la Mediterrània project.

The work refers to the myth of Calipso, the nymph who keeps Ulisses on her island and represents beauty, seduction and a pause along the journey. Calipso symbolises the moment when the traveller hesitates between staying and leaving, between desire and return.

Within Bennàssar’s sculptural ensemble, this piece connects with the sea, the island and the emotional power of Mediterranean myths. Located in Son Serra de Marina, it invites us to contemplate the horizon as a space of calm, mystery and decision.
