Can Verga Jove

Can Verga Jove, also known as Can March, is a stately home in Santa Margalida linked to one of the most significant and controversial figures in Spain's contemporary history: Joan March Ordinas.

The building was a wedding gift given in 1903 by Joan March Estelrich—known as *Verga Vell* (Old Verga)—to his son, Joan March Ordinas, known as *Verga Jove* (Young Verga). The mansion is a modest example of a village gentleman’s residence, featuring an exterior that follows the typical style of Mallorcan urban architecture. This exterior simplicity contrasted sharply with the rich ornamentation and furnishings found inside.

Joan March Ordinas, a native of Santa Margalida, became one of the 20th century’s leading financiers and entrepreneurs. His career took him far beyond Mallorca: he spearheaded large-scale business ventures, founded Banca March, and wielded significant influence over Spain’s economic and political life. He has also been a figure of controversy due to his role in some of the most complex episodes of 20th-century Spanish and international history.

Thus, Can Verga Jove is not merely a mansion of architectural interest; it is also a place that offers insight into the social, economic, and historical reach of a family from Santa Margalida that came to play a pivotal role in Mallorca, Spain, and the international arena.
