El vigía

A sculpture gazing towards the horizon. *El Vigia* evokes observation, protection, and waiting in the face of the vastness of the sea.

El Vigia, also known as El Guaita, is a sculpture by Joan Bennàssar created in 2016 as part of the La nova Ítaca de la Mediterrània project.

The work forms part of the sculptural ensemble El Vincle, together with other pieces such as Nausicaa / Telèmac, Penèlope, Els Argonautes and Ulisses / Odisseu.

It is a figure looking towards the horizon, evoking observation, waiting and protection before the vastness of the sea. El Vigia represents the one who watches the way ahead, observes arrivals and departures, and keeps the connection with the Mediterranean landscape alive.

Within Bennàssar’s ensemble, this sculpture connects with the ideas of journey, return and the attentive gaze towards the bay.
