Graded School

The *Escola Graduada*—popularly known as *s’Escola Vella*—is one of the most distinctive and iconic civic buildings in Santa Margalida. It is located facing *s’Abeurador* Square and was built between 1924 and 1927 based on a design by the architect Guillem Forteza.

The building is part of the town’s educational, social, and historical memory. For decades, it was a central hub for education, and generations of local residents passed through its classrooms.

Its history also holds more difficult chapters. During the Civil War (1936–1939), it was used to detain opponents of General Franco’s coup d’état, a fact that also gives it significant value as a site of democratic memory.

The *Escola Graduada* (Graded School) served its educational purpose until 2003. Today, it houses the Joan Mascaró i Fornés Cultural Centre, which includes the municipal library, the municipal historical archive, exhibition halls, and an auditorium.

Today, *s’Escola Vella* (the Old School) is much more than just a former school: it is a symbol of educational progress, community life, and the historical memory of Santa Margalida.
